I'm directing this article to those who are just starting their eBay Selling Venture.  Whether you're selling books, DVDs, CDs, collectibles or clothing, all things (with the exception of eBooks and services) need to be mailed.   And it's the postage, handling fees and mailing that seems to cause a great deal of angst among new sellers. 

You've heard the advice – don't overcharge for shipping.  That is very good advice, indeed, as nothing turns off potential buyers like sellers who gouge you on the shipping costs.  It's also a practice that can rack up bad feedback.

However, I'm going to play Devil's Advocate here and suggest that you don't go overboard and give so much of a break on shipping that you're chipping away at your profits.  It's good to remember the "hidden costs" of shipping:  bubble wrap to secure your breakables, tape, shipping envelopes, boxes, etc.  Then there's the gas you put in your car to take all those trips to the post office.

You might think I'm being cheap, but, if you added up all your eBay expenses for the year (as some did for their recent taxes) you might be shocked to see how all the packing materials and gas for your car added up and took a little chunk out of your eBay profits.  And, believe me, they do add up.

Some people are even more surprised to find they underestimated the weight of their packages, causing their profits to shrink even further. 

How can you be fair to both you and your buyers?

1.  Buy a scale.  It may sound simple, but purchasing a scale can save you a bundle in shipping.  If you're just eyeballing the weight of the package, you can often times guess too low, and be in for quite a shock when you go to the post office and see the package is going to cost twice what you thought to ship. 

2.  Know the dimensions of your packaging before listing the item.  Some packages cost more to ship because of their dimensions.  Knowing the weight alone isn't enough. 

3.  Offer the buyer a variety of shipping methods.  Some prefer speedy delivery with Express mailing, while some prefer to save money with parcel post even though the wait is longer. It's always a good idea when using parcel post or other slower ground shipping to alert the buyer by email that it can take anywhere from 8 to 10 days.

4.  Save yourself money whenever possible by using boxes that have been used.  Most stores are more than happy to let you rummage through their old boxes and take some home with you.  But, do remember to choose boxes that are presentable, secure and strong enough for your items.  And, if you have breakables, don't skimp on the bubble wrap.

5.  Give yourself a small handling fee that will cover your expenses.  Some sellers add on an additional $1 or $2 to the shipping fees for their handling fees (depending on the cost of the item and how much packaging you have to use).  I really advocate doing this because your expenses will add up if you do a lot of selling on eBay.  Be sure to be upfront with your buyers that you have a small handling fee so they can't complain about it later. 

Being fair to both yourself and your buyer will keep you both happy, and keep more of your profit in your pocket.

This is a subject that everyone seems to be arguing about at the moment. Everyone trying to second-guess Google's actions - which they will NEVER do - and wondering whether reciprocal linking is dead, dying or if it is something worth carrying on.

'Nuff of the speculation. Here's the proof.

Google do not like reciprocal link directories and they can sniff one out a mile off. There was (notice the use of the past tense here) a link directory on my site until recently, but I have now removed it, because it had become as useful as a chocolate teapot.

Whilst the main front page of the site has retained it's Google PageRank of PR5, in one of their last updates, Google relegated that directory, which had also  previously had a PR5, to a PR 0.

Meanwhile, I had not altered my linking structure that pointed to it. I had not altered my policies either: I did not link TO any PR0 sites, kept the number of links per page down to a minimum and there were even text descriptions for each entry listed.

Google could tell what it was and acted as they saw fit.

There is no point wondering or whining about it. They can and they are doing so in order to provide better results to searchers. You can like it or lump it, but if you want them to give you decent listings, ranks or send you any traffic, their rules count.

My advice: forget *artificial* reciprocal linking completely. The time taken to maintain the directory, approve/disaprove submissions (mostly the latter,  because the only people still asking for links are crappy PR0 sites and spammers) can be much better spent.

When you want to exchange links with other sites, make sure you do so in a natural way, by which I mean write about the other site in some way and place natural links within the body text.

And consider just giving to get. By which I mean, link out to useful things for the edification or entertainment of your visitors giving no consideration to the  immediate usefulness of that link to you.

What goes around will come around. Once you are seen as useful, others will link to you. You do then get your links "reciprocated", but it may not be from  the same people to whom you linked.

That is the natural way of linking that Google wants to see.

Do not, under any circumstances, maintain anything (other than internal navigation) that could look like merely a list of links / link farm, because Google  will find it, won't like it and will penalize it.

Reciprocal linking, in the form of lists or directories merely created for that very purpose cannot do anything to help you with Google (quite the opposite, in fact) and therefore, est mortuus. [RIP]

Typical merchant accounts usually have a monthly charge associated with the account, whether you sell anything online or not.  They also have a lower percentage rate they charge the merchant, so for higher volumes, the merchant will end up saving money with this solution.

When deciding what type of merchant account you should get, you will want to determine the costs associated with merchant processing based on estimated monthly sales volumes.  For instance, if you expect to sell 15 items that cost $25 each on average, then determine how much a third party processor like Paypal would charge you for that, and then how much a standard merchant account processor would charge you for the month based upon the same volume.  You will find that in going through this excercise, you will discover a break-even point at which you will pay less using a standard merchant account as opposed to the third party processor such as Paypal.

2. You are new to the whole ecommerce concept

If you are new to selling your product or service online  (ecommerce), then it may make sense to use a 3rd party processor, such as Paypal to handle your online payments.  This way, you aren't forced into any long term contracts, and can discontinue using it if your business isn't working.  In most cases you can do this without having to continue to pay additional fees, such as a monthly service charge, to the this type of merchant account processor.  With Paypal, it is easy to start up the online processing again without any additional costs, if you choose to give your online business another try.

3. You sell your items on Ebay

Ebay is one of the largest selling platforms on the Internet today.  Ebay became so successful, they even purchased Paypal.   Ebay does accept payments through other means besides Paypal, but they set it up so that it is easier to perform your transactions through Paypal than other methods.

If you are doing a huge number of transactions through Ebay,  it may make more sense to use your own merchant processing account as you will save a lot of money.  However the average Ebay seller usually doesn't have the volume to justify using their own online merchant account unless they are already using it for another online business.

Different needs for the ecommerce merchant require different solutions.  By no means is there a "one size fits all" type of solution.  Merchant processing solutions that work well for one online merchant, may spell disaster for another.  The best thing an online merchant can do is to determine their expected  sales volume, and their needs, and then find a solution that best serves them.  For merchants who are new to ecommerce, and don't expect to generate a lot of volume, Paypal can be a good solution to get them started
